Project - Design System Documentation MCP
Design System Documentation MCP
Project Description
An AWS Bedrock powered AI agent giving engineers and designers instant access to design system guidelines, component usage, content guidelines, and design tokens through an MCP server and API.
Employer
Cisco
Industry
Enterprise Design / Design Systems
Project Type
AI Agent / MCP Server
Duration
4 months
The Problem to Solve
Design system knowledge was scattered and hard to access at the point of work:
Guidelines, tokens, and component docs spread across systems — no single place to query them.
Engineers and designers had to context-switch out of their tools to find answers.
No scalable way to surface design system knowledge inside developer workflows.
How We Tackled the Problem
Discovery & Research
Identified the highest-friction knowledge gaps for both engineers and designers: component usage, design guidelines, content standards, and token usage.
Strategic Planning
Architected a three-layer system (Augmentation, Retrieval, Information) on AWS Bedrock ready for specialized sub-agents with production-grade reliability.
Design & Development
Built the ingestion pipeline (S3 → Titan Embeddings → OpenSearch → Bedrock KB), the Bedrock Agent, a chat interface via the AWS Converse API, and a FastMCP server on AWS Lambda exposing the agent as an MCP tool.
Launch & Support
Shipped proof of concept serving both engineers and designers, with the MCP integration validating AWS Bedrock as a viable enterprise AI platform.
The Solution
Chat interface and MCP server giving engineers and designers on-demand access to design system knowledge.
RAG pipeline over design guidelines, component docs, content guidelines, and design tokens.
Extensible multi-agent foundation ready for domain-specific sub-agents.
Impact & Outcomes
Production-ready agent serving both engineers and designers across the org.
Design system knowledge surfaced inside VS Code via MCP — no context switching.
Validated AWS Bedrock as an enterprise AI platform for the design organization.
